She Begins to Purr

Kittens,
cats,
animals, in fact,
serene our world with coy meows,
or blissful barks upon air
instilled
with ‘due’
upon mourning’s
up rise…
Our hearts to attract
for feed
or face kisses;
since, at times,
ouches profound
produces
quick volatile hisses
looping
spiraling
cries
like rockets set free
into stealth sky
before glowing wondrous hues
of reds, oranges,
smoldering
blues
because underneath
millions
global
die.
Rooftops smoke.
Buildings burn.
Even reindeers cry
though, camouflaged
by gift-giving, thoughtful
in its benevolent lie…
She, my sweet, sits at my feet,
oozes sweetness in repeat,
her voice calling me
to feed me–eat,
frees my thoughts of neon flashing,
towns, neighborhoods, villages, communities
crashing,
victims dashing into crowded streets,
tripping, falling
calling out to and for hope…
How do we with these news images
daily cope?

Now kitten is bathing on the window sill
in our living room.
I perch on our sofa’s edge.
Watch shadows of leaves
dance on the pavement
while stroking her fur…
She begins to purr.166 words
