More to Come (contest Sunset, Cowboy Style – Cheryl Li)

Give me a ranch with many hands
to lighten my load of horse and sheep
which graze and sleep on acres of land
green, level, or with rolling hills–
not too rocky or steep with cliffs arising
in speed or to wicked peaks
but scattered about with lakes tranquil,
still, or rippling by breezes whipping leaves
to rustle a sonnet whispered to me
as I tend to fences or toss hay…
Even if I just decide to lay in a field
of daffodils, sunflowers, wheat, or corn,
I’d raise my eyes to where stars were born
listening to hawks, birds, or tunes
of farm hands happy… Not always lonely
sad or forlorn…
For my heart yearns too
to stride towards a saddle
broken in by my rides in gallop or
grant a treat of sugar cubes,
carrots, pears, and apples to a favorite
pony; then fly alongside my best friend ‘babe’
or one of many ‘cronies’ til thirsty…
How refreshing to dream
of sipping water from a barrel with a ladle
in front of my barn.
I’d ride my stallion with female pride
among menfolk trained to cattle ride
with whips not handled to abuse hides…
These friends and family only desire to guide
away from danger and lovingly attend
until the time any beef cow’s life to end
to lie upon a table enabled to accompany
a wide variety of ethnicities…
My ranch to always hold good and pleasant company.
Around fire pits or pool tables spouted stories
of fun–fiction or nonfiction
of times long ago. Of distant places. Of people we know
or guitars and banjos strummed in fading sun…
Thankful for an eternity of more moons to come…40 lines
