Tree of Knowledge

i.

indeed said:

“Man, born of woman,
Is short-lived and filled with trouble.
He comes up like a blossom and then withers away;
He flees like a shadow and disappears.”

ii.

alas!… there she stood
bone of mine honed exquisite
flesh perfection to behold… my own,

beloved

a queen bee
producing nectar sweet
as we strolled giddy

juices of many fruit-bearing trees
dripped from our lips
teasing,

whispering close to ears
highly in tune

to what… I forget

but birds perched on high stems chirped
and rabbits fleet in their hopping retreated
across our feet enmeshed in rich soil
replete with minerals

We became spoiled
with time of no essence

Breezes enjoyed as simply pleasing
swirled around and between limbs entwined

before twisted

with each brilliant glorious sunrise
a God-given eternal treat

and every dipping moon
replete as a lesser luminary
still holding lovely promise–

restorative sleep

iii.

you arrived

a butterfly colorful
beautiful

believed

spring everlasting
gleaned from a new bite
unseen by my eyes

I watched
in anxious horror
to discern
at what point you
like animals before me
eventually would return to earth

dirt

I felt an inner pain foreign

It hurt
to imagine a paradise
without you

Disintegrating matter?
since you spurned directions given
as a test of loyalty

tempting me with
“See!… Nothing’s happened.
Come with me!”

Tormented.

Why didn’t I consult with Father
about your disloyalty?

A future with blossoming trees
in our garden
without you by my side
I did not want to conceive

I envisioned a desert

Dryness consumed my soul
although dew daily glistening blades of gentle grass
endlessly swaying

is what I’ve always known

vi.

sewn
leaves to conceal
wrong desires suddenly exposed

Yanked the veil of ignorance
blown

An embarrassment
then justification,
stipulated punishment

Sown
in cursed soil seeds
struggling to break through

speedily

grown discontentment
with innocence gone

as she I now bury

v.

Unearthed
abject misery
